Our institutes
Advancing artificial intelligence means applying the latest research to real-world challenges. Our teams of AI pioneers, leading data scientists, and renowned faculty work together at our institutes to help meet the world鈥檚 most crucial needs with AI.

Institute for
Experiential AI
Our work centers on finding new ways to advance human and machine intelligence. With a world-class team of pioneers, we鈥檙e solving the thorniest challenges in health, climate, responsible AI, and other critical areas. We empower organizations, students, and professional learners harness AI responsibly and effectively.
Institute for Experiential Robotics
With Northeastern鈥檚 hallmark interdisciplinary approach, we鈥檙e breaking new ground in what robots can learn and do, and their ability to adapt to changing conditions. We conduct research in five areas鈥攄riving discoveries that impact healthcare, sustainability, manufacturing, and how humans work.

Impact Engines
Addressing today鈥檚 interconnected challenges demands interdisciplinary expertise and experience. Our Impact Engines are diverse clusters of AI researchers, learners, and partners focused on a global problem and its contexts and perspectives.
Labs and centers
Accelerate your research with expertise and resources from our multi-campus research community.
AI Literacy Lab
This project joins experts from the School of Journalism and the Internet Democracy Initiative. As we study how media and AI intersect, we鈥檙e accelerating and expanding public understanding of AI, its uses, and their consequences. Faculty host an annual symposium for members of the media, researchers, and technologists.
Data Lab at Northeastern
Our expert researchers lead advances in data management and systems, finding better ways to organize, access, and use numbers. This work has shaped the foundations of data integration, data curation, and computing. Projects range from analyzing massive collections of brain images to data management of high-energy physics.
Game User Interaction and Intelligence Lab
Northeastern hosts the Eastern arm of this UCSC lab, which is shaping the emerging fields of game design, interactive arts, and interactive media with innovations in design, design mechanics, user experience measurement, and application of AI algorithms. Our findings are also advancing approaches to mental health, climate change, and STEM education.
Helping Hands Lab
This lab develops new algorithms that expand the capabilities of robots, boosting autonomy, safety, and efficiency, and introducing new applications. With a focus on built-for-human environments, our work maximizes the effectiveness of robots in real-world settings.
Lab for Learning and Planning in Robotics
In the realm of AI-driven robotics, this team focuses on innovations that help robots, autonomous cars, and other autonomous devices reason, learn, and act appropriately in complex environments, where their ability to observe and pick up data is compromised.
mHealth
Our personal health informatics research group combines human-computer interaction, machine learning, and behavioral science to break new ground in personalized mobile health interventions. With new mathematical models, we鈥檙e helping phones and smart watches leverage personal data to produce real-time guidance that encourages healthier decisions.
Natural Language Processing Research Group
With machine learning, our team of faculty and students is helping computers make sense of and respond to human language. We tackle a wide range of issues, with particular interest in biomedical NLP, data extraction, text summarization, bias and fairness, applications for digital humanities, and more.
Relational Agents Group
With research and leading-edge engineering, we design simulated counselors that stand in for humans, providing automated guidance and support. From helping cancer patients report measures from home to providing diversity training, this work has many practical applications in healthcare and beyond.
Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence for Time Variant Health Data Lab
From stress to sleep, the SATH Lab is changing the way we think about personal health, and developing new ways to discover digital biomarkers and human traits. Our team of undergraduate and graduate students uses signal processing and machine learning to improve physical and mental health with mobile phones, wearables, and clinical devices.
Sociotechnical Equity and Agency Lab
Researchers at SEAL work at the intersection of technology, society, and equity to improve social technical systems. The lab鈥檚 research focuses on how technology impacts different communities and how individual agency enhances understanding and informs public policy, such as legislation on online safety.
Spatiotemporal Learning Group
Working with award-winning machine learning researcher Rose Ru, Northeastern doctoral students are drawing valuable lessons from large-scale spatiotemporal data. With deeper understanding of changes that occur over time and across locations, our findings enable forecasting, decision making, and policy that impact healthcare and sustainability.
Statistical Methods for Studies of Biomolecular Systems
Data scientists in this lab use AI to create tools that unlock data and predict outcomes. This helps them examine complex biological systems for molecular evidence, enabling them to reconstruct the progression of disease. Their findings help caregivers accelerate diagnosis and pinpoint effective treatment.
Synergetic Media Learning Lab
At the award-winning SMILE Lab, researchers analyze masses of data from the internet, social media, and other public sources by teaching machines to interpret visual data with a human lens.
The Ubiquitous Computing for Health and Well-being
Data science, human-centered computing, behavioral science and wearable devices come together at UbiWell Lab. Here, researchers from Khoury College of Computer Sciences and Bouv茅 College of Health Sciences are driving better outcomes for behavioral and mental health interventions by refining detection, timing, and approach.
